Question

What do users think Brain Defense is?

Answer

  • We talked to a mix of existing customers and non-customers.
  • Existing customers who had downloaded our Workbooks and subscribed to the mailing list had never heard of Brain Defense before.
  • Both users do not understand what Brain Defense is. Ideas range from software that prevents kids from seeing things online to a mental strategy.
  • Because of that lack of clarity, I believe people are not buying Brain Defense.

  • We showed Lauren the current page before it was published.
  • When I asked, "What do you think this company does?" she responded: "It is trying to inform me or sell me on a course. A course to teach parents digital defense skills." BOOM! That is the first time we had a great answer to that question. The design is working.
  • She described herself as a bad website reader. She just wanted to click on "Free Sample". I think this is huge. She read the intro header/subheader, understood what it was, thought it looked cool, and was ready to click a free sample. Many users will do the same thing. That is exactly what we want to have happen.
  • She told me two or three times she thought the website was repetitive. I think this shows her style of using technology. Make a decision and experience it. For other visitors, they want to read more in depth before making a decision.
  • Lauren is from South Africa. She is the mom of one 12 year old son and a 21 year old step child.
  • She is a mental health therapist.
  • She homeschools her 12 year old son.
  • She has downloaded our Workbooks as well as subscribes and reads our newsletter.

  • "From the title, I feel this is a online experience. I am very familiar with this. It is a course or modules about helping us."
  • She has bought hundreds of courses for a bunch of different things.
  • She knew that Brain Defense was a thing but never clicked on the page. I'm not sure if she knows that.
  • "My favorite courses are ones that are short."
  • Often times I will listen to courses while I am driving.
  • She did not like the word, "Manual". But she does like scripts. Interesting.
  • She might be the best interview we did. I believe she is EXACTLY our target customer.
  • She has only bought two things. One was the eBook, "How to Talk To Your Kids After They See at Porn"
  • She did a therapy session with a therapist named "Stacey" who has a blog article on our website.
  • She has Good Pictures, Bad Pictures. And she has shared it with tons of families.
  • Kids are always on YouTube, whether it is at home or at school.
  • As much as I am productive at talking with them, I cannot protect them from everything they see.
  • Kids have an internal discernment to decide what is right and wrong.
  • Many of the courses she has she has forgotten about.
  • She works as a Speech Therapist in public schools in Washington
  • She has two girls, ages 11 and 8.
  • The way she talks, it sounds like she has some experience with technology. Not sure where this came from, but she was sharp.

  • She subscribes to DYM because she needs support. "I need more help and more information to share with families."
  • While she looked at the site for the first time, she looked at the title of the video, and that told her what the company did. Our eyes are INCREDIBLE. They make decisions so fast, often looking for the shortest possible path towards information.
  • "If I don't ask people directly about pornography, they won't tell me."
  • I work with 8 year olds that see porn on Discord. I have 10 year olds who are addicted to porn.
  • I have older clients who have lost their jobs.
  • There is not a lot of information in Canada about porn and prevention. Even when I got hired by the government. They thought it was more about gaming and gambling.
  • She does a lot of talks with preschool aged kids and their families.
  • She worked for three years in Canada teaching people about the effects about gambling.
  • She has worked for years as a therapist helping people who struggle with pornography.
  • Kristen might be someone you want to reach out to.
  • One of her kids did online school after struggling with bullying at her high school.

  • "I never read the book to my kids. I use it as a conversation starter and for pictures." She has read it on her own. She asks them if they want to read it.
  • She has never heard of Brain Defense.
  • She is a subscriber to the newsletter and reads it regularly.
  • We showed her the older version of the site, Brain Defense 1.0. The current version is 3.0.
  • She was thinking that Brain Defense is a place where my kids go to learn strategies.
  • I did the same thing with a sex book, and they were mortified by the book.
  • Her kids did public school. She did consider homeschooling them. At the time, she was afraid of the environment they were going into. But mostly due to their individual needs.
  • "Refusal skills is a funky word to me"
  • Lives in Arizona.
  • Had the first edition of the book, about 10 years ago. When she did, her kids were between 7 and 15.
  • She has 4 kids.
  • She is an educator and runs a company that educates parents about improving their relationship with their kid.

  • I showed Cori the older version of the site, Brain Defense 1.0. We are currently on 3.0.
  • When she looked at it she thought Brain Defense, "It is something that I pay for, and something that I login to. It is some sort of software that you download to prevent your kids from seeing something. It watches what is happening on our devices and blocks it if it needs to."
  • "I have all girls, and while I know that pornography is still a problem for girls, I am not as worried as if I had sons." This was a very common thought from the people we talked to. Something we should address on the page.
  • A lot of the feedback she had was specific to the older page and has been fixed already. But great interview!
  • "I taught Spanish before I had kids. I noticed things that I thought I could do better. It is really hard to get a customized setting in a group setting. If people can go faster, they can't. If they need more time, they can't."
  • "She wanted to incorporate religion into what the she did at school."
  • She teaches two book groups and two Spanish classes for home school people.
  • "I only use Facebook for homeschool groups. I have seen a lot more people do homeschooling since COVID hit. A lot of them are either wanting
  • Cori has five kids and lives in Bountiful, UT.
  • All of them are homeschooled. Have been since they first were in school.
  • They are now in college and junior high.

  • We showed her version 2.0 of Brain Defense, designed by the previous designers before me.
  • When I asked her what she thought she was buying, she said she thought it was "curriculum. Something similar to the other resources I've bought for kids."
  • "I don't want to feel so afraid that I don't let my kids do anything. So I like how this page is describing ways to keep them safe, not by making them simply not use technology."
  • "We used to have this thing called Canyon Grove which was an online school and they had a curriculum library and you could check anything out. It would be awesome to have this on there."
  • She liked the lesson titles.
  • "When I'm looking for a curriculum, I'm looking for things where I don't need any prep. That is awesome that I can just open it up and use it."
  • "I like how I can see how this will fit in our schedule. I like that it breaks it down into how long things will take."
  • "I like how there are teens who are mentors."
  • "How can we include my husband in these conversations?"
  • "Personally, I would be a bit intimidated by the price. I don't know if it is worth $150. It is nice that I can get lifetime access."
  • I tried sharing the new design with her. The problem is once they see one design, they use what they learned on the other page to get the bigger picture. Like showing someone 1/5 of a puzzle, before they see another 1/5. It makes it much easier to see what it is.
  • Bliss is the friend of my next door neighbor.
  • She has two sons who are both under the age of 10.
  • She homeschools both of them.

  • We showed her Brain Defense 2.0. We are currently on 3.0.
  • "I would say this is some sort of monitoring thing that protects your kids from things online." Exactly what the other person said about this version!
  • "My daughter is 13. Would this work for her as well? How strict is the age range? Why did they choose these ages?"
  • About the lesson titles section: "Are these the lessons, or are each of these covered in each lesson?"
  • "When it says research based, I want to see more examples."
  • "If I bought this and did it with my family, I don't know if I would go back." I think this is a very valid concern. Essential she is asking, "Is it valuable?" By asking this question, I think it is clear she can't see enough value.
  • Her husband was the one in their family who wanted them to homeschool. He didn't enjoy school growing up. He doesn't sit well and has a bunch of energy.
  • The more she researched the more she saw the benefits.
  • "There are a lot of reasons now. I would say the politics of it (Jill seems to be more conservative). Also a lot of wasted time. Not a personal attack on teachers. There is just too much to do."
  • They do a lot of different things to keep it fresh. The do swim team during the day.
  • "I like my kids. I want to be with them!"
  • "I like when my kids are learning from teens. They might pay attention more."
  • Jill lives in my family's old ward and I met her through our friend in that ward.
  • She has a 13 year old, 10 year old, and 8 year old.
  • I've homeschooled them for everything except for my oldest's preschool.
