Who am I?
My name is Rob Metcalf.
Since 2019, I’ve been working as a freelance designer.
I’ve worked with 30+ startups in many fields like medical, fin-tech, real estate tech, Amazon sellers, scheduling, CRMs, fitness, restaurant, and a few more. Plus made web apps, desktop apps, and mobile apps for iOS and Android.
Here are a few things I believe:
- Great design can really only be measured by one thing: does it help companies make more money. Sounds harsh... but it's true.
- There are two ways we can do that: increasing conversions or reducing churn. Both are possible, important, and hard.
- I try to make products easy to learn. And relearn. That is different than making things easy to use.
- I think the best way to make products great is talking to users. That is almost always inconveinent, and almost always worth it.
- I’m a huge believer in A/B testing. Both in marketing and also in products.
- After talking to users, the best way to make a design great is to do way more iterations than you think you need to. You think you have it after 2? Do 10 more.
- I believe that designers should code the front end. Not just know how. I believe if I designed it, I should code it. It makes companies move 3x faster.
